Return Of The Guardian CH 7

“We need to talk about whatever that was." Sunny told him.
“That's not something I want to talk about, or even think about, anymore." Starflight replied.
“What happened, that only Glory, Tsunami, and Fatespeaker know about?"
Starflight's breath hitched. “Sunny, I don't want to talk to you about that, I don't want to put that weight on your shoulders."
“Star, I can handle it, if it's important, then I want to know."
“Ask one of them, I don't think I could handle telling you."
“They won't tell me, only you can." Sunny replied. “If it's about you, then it must be you."
“Fine" Starflight walked away from her. “When we first started construction on the school, I was blind, heartbroken, and useless."
“Starflight, you…"
“Let me continue." Starflight cut her off. “Before Fatespeaker and I started dating, I spent all of my time laying there, doing nothing. You didn't notice because you were busy, but I stopped eating for weeks at a time. I just sat there and slept, for months. Well, after a while, depression sat in, and I felt like I didn't belong in this world anymore. I lost my love, my vision, everything. If I could still see, I would have left, followed Clearsight and flown over to Pantala, and never come back. But I was stuck, blind, unable to say anything or do anything. So, one night I…"
Sunny looked over at him, and she could tell he was trying not to sob.
“I… They found me, and stopped me. Tsunami found me, and she got Glory and Fatespeaker, because everybody else was asleep, and we talked, for a long time."
“What happened, what did they stop?"
“I… Sunny, I don't think I can keep going."
Sunny walked up to him and rubbed her muzzle against his. “Alright."
“But I have too." Starflight inhaled deeply. “Sunny, I tried to kill myself."
Sunny felt as if she had been hit by a mountain. Darkstalker could have rose out of the ground again, and that would feel light compared to this. She stumbled a bit, and sat down.
“What…?"
“It's not your fault, I was hurt, I was tired, even though I sleep all day, and I felt useless, a drain on you and the others."
“But you, looked fine." Sunny spoke, unable to think.
“It's easy to hide your true emotions when nobody can see your eyes." Starflight told her.
“But, why? I mean I know why, but, why?"
He looked over at her. “I was in a lot of pain Sunny."
“Oh god." Sunny burst into tears. “I'm so sorry."
She buried her face in her neck, sobbing.
“It's okay, it wasn't just you. I also had physical pain while my wounds were healing, and I was still bumping into a lot of things. But sometimes, I did that on purpose just to feel something."
Sunny looked up at him. “Why didn't you tell me?"
“Because of this, I would do anything so you wouldn't be like this, I never want to see you hurt, or even sad like this."
She sniffed. “What exactly happened?"
“I flew off one night, way into the woods, and was about to slit my own throat. But I didn't hear Tsunami following me, and she tackled me before I could do anything. She dragged me back, and pushed me into the cave that Glory and Fatespeaker happened to be in. She told them what happened, and they all tried to talk me down. It took a while, but eventually I calmed down and they let me return to my cave." Starflight sniffed. “I wasn't in a good frame of mind, and I still wasn't until you told me you loved me back."
Sunny wrapped her wings around Starflight, and held him close. “I don't know what I would do if I lost you.
“In my mind I was freeing myself, and you, so you can be with somebody else." Starflight replied.
“I understand, and I am so, so sorry I hurt you." Sunny replied.
They laid down on the bed, Sunny was still crying, but lighter now.
“I know what I can do to make you happy again." Starflight spoke.
She looked up at him. “What about you? I want you to be happy, I want to focus on you now, not me, you. I did this to you; I deserve to be unhappy."
“Michael, I want you to heal my eyes now." Starflight called out. “And Sunny, if you aren't happy, I'm not happy."
“I nearly killed you!" Sunny sobbed.
Starflight smiled at her. “You saved me, if I didn't have you, I would never have been able to do anything. I would have stayed at the old nightwing stronghold. Or worse, I don't think I would have shown myself to Scarlet when she came in the cave. Without you, I would have surely died. You are the only thing I can hold onto no matter what happens. The only reason I didn't try again and again was a hope that you would come back to me."
Sunny sniffed. “Is that true?"
“Yes, I love you, more than anything else. I don't care where I am or what I'm doing as long as I get to stay close to you." Starflight told her. “Michael?"
Finally, you can stop yapping about being blind and useless, even Moon was starting to get annoyed.
“Does she know?" Starflight asked.
She does, but she doesn't know what to think about it.
“I don't either." Sunny mumbled, holding Starflight close. “Just the thought of losing you… It's… Unbearable."
Now, take of your blindfold.
Sunny reached up and helped him untie the band of white cloth, and it fell away. Sunny gasped when she saw the red burns across his eyes. But she also watched as they faded, and the familiar face of her love returned. His eyes, clouded with white, began to clear, and he eventually looked directly into her eyes.
“You've gotten even more beautiful." Was his first words.
Sunny felt her breath fall away, and she nuzzled him heavily. “Oh, I love you."
She laid her head down next to his, and slowly closed them. Starflight couldn't help but stare as the love of his life fell asleep in his arms. He watched her sleep for a while, before he followed her.
Starflight woke, and did a double take before his brain remembered he can see now. He looked down at Sunny, and smiled as he saw her sleeping figure. She looked way more beautiful than he had remembered, and he wanted to memorize every feature he could before he got up. He never realized how much he had taken advantage of seeing her until he couldn't anymore. Eventually, he got up and left her to sleep in. He looked around the academy in amazement, it looked nothing like what he had imagined. While he was looking around the main hall, he bumped into Moon.
“Oh, hi Starflight, wait, you can see?"
Wow, definitely not how Qibli was describing her.
“Yeah, I finally let Michael heal me." Starflight told her.
“How was Qibli describing me?" Moon asked.
“Extremely detailed, with much fascination." Starflight replied. “But actually, seeing is better, he didn't mention the green."
“Yeah, Tamarin was talking about your wings too, they definitely outshine every other nightwing I've ever met."
Starflight blushed “Uhm, thanks."
Should I tell her about the engagement?
Moon cocked her head.
Guess I just did.
“Uhm, yeah, Sunny and I, were engaged."
Moon's jaw dropped, and Qibli walked over to her with a worried look.
“What is it?" Then he turned and noticed Starflight's eyes “Oh"
“Not that." Moon replied. “Him and Sunny, they got engaged."
Qibli followed his fiancée's expression, and Starflight smiled at them.
“I'm going to go talk to Sunny." Moon spoke, and walked towards the teacher's caves.
Qibli watched her go, then smiled at Starflight. “Another sandwing-nightwing couple."
“Yeah, you can say that." Starflight replied. “We are planning on doing a small wedding on a beach somewhere. Our own type of thing, with only a few friends, your invited, obviously."
Qibli smiled and nodded. “Moon told me she wants to do a sandwing traditional one, but I think she says that because she knows that's what I want."
“I think she doesn't want to do a nightwing one, so the next best option is a sandwing one." Starflight replied. “I don't want to have a nightwing one either, I just don't feel connected with that tribe."
“Yeah, I get that." Qibli replied. “My mom and I weren't on the best of terms, when I left I only had Thorn, and the others. I guess if I never had them, I wouldn't have reconnected with the sandwings at all."
Starflight nodded. “Speaking of parents, I need to go talk to my dad."
“Good luck then." Qibli replied, and walked out of the hall.
Starflight made his way down into the underground lake, he looked over and found Mastermind sitting on the side, working on some contraption with a net. It was supposed to catch those blind fish that always were able to duck away from somebody whenever they got nearby. Starflight walked up and watched him work for a moment. Since Starflight had only ever seen him once before, he was now finally able to see just how alike they were. Their wings were similar, and their facial structures as well.
“Uhm, hello." Starflight finally spoke.
Mastermind jumped, and looked over at Starflight.
“Oh, hi, nice to see you." Mastermind replied. “Oops, sorry, poor choice of words."
“I got my eyes fixed." Starflight told him.
Mastermind squinted. “Oh, good. They look just like your mother's you know."
“How well did you know her?"
“We knew each other for a long time, and I was very happy when we got paired."
“Did you love her?"
Mastermind flinched a little. “I like to believe so, yes."
“How did she die?"
“They say she died defending a seawing from two skywings, but I don't believe it."
“Why not?"
“Because I never saw her body." Mastermind looked phased out for a moment, then shook his head and turned back to him. “But I never heard anything about her ever again."
“What about your mother?" Starflight asked.
Mastermind jumped and looked over at him with worry. “What about her?"
“Who was she?"
“Uhm, nobody… I didn't really get to know her." Mastermind replied, shuffling nervously.
“You're lying." Starflight replied, disappointed.
Mastermind sighed when he heard the tone of his son. “Fine, since Glory already knows, I might as well tell you. My mother was queen Battlewinner."
Starflight gasped. “Does that mean…"
“You're a prince, yes. Your daughters, if you have any, could be seen as possible heirs since Glorious never rose to the throne."
“So, they would be heirs to both the sand throne and the night throne." Starflight mumbled to himself.
“Wait, what?" Mastermind replied. “Sand kingdom?"
Starflight blushed and turned back to his father. “I'm uh, getting married, to Sunny."
“That odd looking sandwing?" Mastermind replied.
Starflight frowned. “I would prefer it if you didn't call her odd."
“Right, of course. I apologize."
“Were getting off topic, back to the queen."
“Right, I was her son, the one she hid from everybody else. As a child I always knew who she was to me, but she never interacted with me. So, it got to a point where I got smarter, and decided to make her notice me. When I started to invent things that benefited the whole tribe, she took a liking to me, and started giving me tasks, and I was willing to do anything for her."
“That's why Glory let you go; you were just doing things your mother asked you."
“Exactly, I'm glad you understand that."
“There isn't anything I wouldn't do for Sunny."
Mastermind nodded. “I'll have to meet her soon. But when she got hurt, I tried so hard to help her, and felt defeated when I couldn't, so when she told me about the plan to take the rainforest, and that she needed my help, I couldn't help but accept. I said my apologies to all the rainwings, and most of them forgive me, but some still don't like me."
Starflight turned to the contraption. “So, how does this work?"
Mastermind smiled. “It's a trap! It sits at the bottom of the lake and senses when a fish swims over them, then it will toss them into this basket, and retract back to its original position."
Starflight looked at the spring contraption, and nodded. “Makes sense."
“I saw how the seawings were getting annoyed about how these kinds of fish can sense their heartbeat, and swim really fast."
Starflight smiled. “Yeah, Anemone mentioned that once."
Mastermind set the trap, and they walked back out into the main hall.
“Why did Battlewinner hide you?"
“She wanted Glorious to not have any challengers, and made sure that any daughter I might have won't challenge her, because she will just say I'm not her son. This was when my father died, so she knew she wouldn't be having any other heirs." Mastermind explained.
Starflight turned, and watched as Winter walked out into the main hall, noticed that Starflight was looking directly at him, and paused.
“Hey." Starflight turned to Mastermind. “Come find me later, I want to introduce you to Sunny."
Mastermind nodded. “I'll see you then, I got another project to start."
He walked away, and Winter walked right up to him.
“You can see?" He spoke “When?"
“Last night, hello to you too Winter." Starflight replied “Sunny has been wondering about you, where have you been? We've barely been seeing you."
“I've been busy figuring out the curriculums for the classes Lynx and I will be teaching." Winter told him.
Starflight nodded. “So, you and Lynx?"
Winter blushed. “We've been dating. What about you and Sunny? I heard you got engaged."
Starflight raised an eyebrow. “Moon?"
“No, Sunny might have let it slip last time we talked." Winter replied. “Moon knows?"
“She does now. Don't divert the conversation, you and Lynx, talk."
“What? Not much to talk about, we went on a few dates, and things are going fine."
Qibli snuck up behind him and laughed when he said this. “Admit it, you like her."
Winter jumped a little, and shot him a look.
“Don't worry, I'll be your best man, as long as your mine." Qibli added.
Starflight smiled.
“What about you, who's yours?" Qibli turned to him.
“Clay, probably." Starflight replied. “I don't really know anybody else that well."
“Thorn told me she would officiate ours." Qibli told him. “She will definetly do yours."
“Or Michael can too." Starflight replied. “Since we aren't planning on following any special traditions, or even having a big wedding."
Qibli's eyes went wide. “You tell her yet?"
Starflight shook her head.
“Then I should go, if I knew before she did." Qibli turned and ran off.
Just then, the aforementioned queen of the sandwings walked into the main hall. Winter turned and followed his best friend, leaving Starflight alone with his future mother-in-law.
