“Grrrrrr.”

“Oh, hey, buddy. How’s today’s flight been?”

“Quite good. Feasted on a moose and the sunbathed on the region’s highest peak. What about you?”

“Well…”

“Still heartbroken?”

“Hem…”

“I see.”

“I mean...you know how long we’ve been a couple, right? Did I tell you?”

“Something like fifty moon cycles, if I remember correctly.”

“Yeah, four years.”

“Why don’t you just go find another mate there, if it makes you feel so bad?”

“Honestly...I don’t know if I want to find another mate. I’m nearly forty years o-I mean, five hundred moon cycles old, and I’ve only collected love disappointment. You know what I wish?”

“What?”

“I wish I was a dragon. Like you?”

“For real? Why?”

“Because you’re solitary creatures! You don’t need love! You can live on your own, flying, hunting, mating once in a while and then being at peace with yourselves in your lair.”

“Well…”

“Am I not right?”

“Maybe. But in all honesty, I feel envy for your species, but for the opposite reason.”

“W...what?”

“Your social nature made you humans do lots of great things. It’s no wonder that you ended up defeating us most times, despite being physically inferior to us in every single aspect. If only we had merged our forces, when we used to be persecuted, we wouldn’t be so rare, and we wouldn’t have to hide.”

“I guess...but it still hurts to love. I don’t know if-”

“If love was so bad, then why am I staying with you? I don’t need your company to survive, right?”

“…”

“But since that time we first met in the mountains and talked about our differences, I knew how much I could learn from sharing my life with someone else. And the more time passed, the more I felt complete because we’re together. You taught me about human love. My dragon strength makes me survive, but human love makes me feel alive.”

“I...see. I’m...I’m flattened.”

“Thank you for existing.”

“Aren’t you angry at humans? Because of what we did to us?”

“For us, there are individuals, not people. So I see you as [name], not as a human.”

“Hehe...guess I had my life companion next to me all these years and didn’t realize it.”

“Now, now. If you want another human mate, I won’t stop you. The more love you give the better.”

“I...I need some time before I search for another one. Can I just have a hug from you for now?”

“Of course.”

“Thank you.”
